1947
  • Creation of the prototype vehicle; its first photographs made available
  • Foundation of the car manufacturing company; the Board of Directors approves the LAND ROVER brand name.
1948
  • Production of the prototype known as Series I approved
  • Presentation of the prototype vehicle at Amsterdam fair
  • The total of 648 was produced, out of which 20 have been preserved up to the present day
1949
  • First Land Rover cars sold in the USA and in Canada
1950
  • Land Rover presented in the USA on an exhibitions of British cars and motorcycles
1954
  • The total of 100,000 Land Rover cars produced (autumn 1954)
1956
  • Land Rover concludes strategic agreement with Metalurgica de Santana, S.A.
  • Car production grows; factories are opened outside Great Britain
1958
  • Series II introduced
  • Land Rover opens Rover Motor Company based in Toronto, Canada
1959
  • The total of 250,000 Land Rover cars was produced (November 1959)
1960
  • Rover Motor Company moves to New York
1961
  • Series IIA introduced in September
1966
  • The total of 500,000 Land Rover cars produced (April 1966)
  • Land Rover as the first car manufacturer outside the USA meets the emission limits
1967
  • Land Rover as the first car manufacturer outside the USA meets the emission limits
1968
  • Leyland merges with the British Motor Holdings (Jaguar owner), giving rise to the British Leyland Motor Corporation
1970
  • Rover Motor Company merges with Leyland, which acquires the majority share
1971
  • The total of 750,000 Land Rover cars produced (June 1971)
  • Series III introduced in September
1974
  • British Leyland MC leaves the North American market.
  • British Leyland MC acquired by the British government in Q4
1976
  • The total of 1,000,000 Land Rover cars was produced (June 1976)
1978
  • Foundation of Land Rover Ltd.
1979
  • February: Land Rover V8 introduced
1981
  • Four-door Range Rover introduced to the public
1984
  • Foundation of the Land Rover Owner Association of America (LROA)
1987
  • Inauguration of the centre for official representation of the company for the North America in Maryland
1988
  • British Aerospace buys the whole Rover Group from the British government for £150,000,000
1989
  • Honda buys 20% share in the Rover Group
  • Beginning of the production of the Discovery model; introduction of the model at the Frankfurt car show
1990
  • Land Rover announces the change of the SII and III name - beginning of the Defender era
  • June: Land Rover sells a 23% share in Land Rover Santana
  • Five-door Discovery model announced in autumn
1993
  • Q4: first sales of the new Defender model met with great acclaim
1994
  • On January 31, BMW buys the whole Rover Group (including LR) from British Aerospace
1999
  • Discovery Series II introduced
2000
  • Ford buys Land Rover from BMW for $ 2.7 billion

  • Unique Terrain ResponseTM trademark introduced.
  • Land Rover Discovery 3 introduced in Detroit
2005
  • Introduction of RANGE ROVER SPORT as a competitor to the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz ML
2007
  • May: the latest facelift of the popular Defender model so far; new facia design; another substantial change is that all back seats are forward-facing
  • Rumours have it that the production of Defender will stop in 2010
  • Range Rover features new engines
